It all starts with a passion and a vision that I decided to explore. After studying communication and sociology, I pursued a path into the creative industry. Fashion appeared as the most relevant social object that I could use as a tool to study cultural mechanisms and transformations.
I like to think about it as a third eye enabling me to comprehend the deep meaning of changes and social dynamics. It is fashion but it could be design or even art in its primal form. I’ve became truly passionate about this capacity to analyse beyond the surface. It led me to create a space where I could expose these researches, analyse and curate.
With this project, my goal is to curate and promote another aspect of fashion. By using a social and cultural lens, I decided to focus on the emerging and alternative fashion since these sectors will be the most relevant in the upcoming years with a growing need for independent labels and authenticity. Over time, I learned a lot about the fashion industry, its role and its actors. It allows me to collaborate with interesting talents from various cultures and backgrounds.
Platform is articulated around an agency dedicated to alternative and emerging designers, a blog exploring cultural and social topics and an Instagram account as part of my knowledge and visual curation. This project started from the assumption that the fashion industry will be more decentralized and fragmented in a near future. Hence, thinking according to niche and ultra-specialization is crucial to understand the role it will have into the upcoming social structures.
As a social actor born from Afro-descendant parents, I grew up in a context that made me reflect on my own origins and the role they play in the definition of my identity. Through daily experiences in France, I’ve witnessed racial mechanisms such micro-aggression or discrimination. From these situations, I’ve learned a lot about the complexity of cultural dynamic and differences. By noticing these patterns I decided to use this knowledge to fight systemic injustices through education and awareness. As the western ideology has deeply oriented the way history is teaching and humanity is seeing, writing is important to bring efficient information that enables us to dismantle such hegemony and uni-dimensional narrative.
This activism part of my life is crucial. Because of all the injustices and inequalities, I feel it is essential to use my practice and work as a tool to help improved living conditions and mentalities. According to my background and history I think it is a role I have to endorse like many other social actors part of other communities.
"Recently, my own heritage has been a real inspiration. As a child of immigrants, living in France, I used to reject my parents’ cultures because to help fit in in my environment. I was alienated for a long time. But recently, I started to investigate my own heritage. I was born with 3 different cultures: France, Senegalese from my dad and, Caribbean from my mom. Although this position is very complex – at times you can feel as if you don’t belong to any of them. I’ve realised that it is actually a real advantage and true source of inspiration."
